Secure
Ambulance

Transport

Our secure ambulances are fitted with a secure area (cage) in the rear section of the vehicle which is accessible to nursing and PSS staff from both the inside and outside of the vehicle. This enables staff to enter the secure area in case of an emergency however the client is unable to obtain outside access unless being escorted.

We are able to provide a driver and any number of escorts (this is usually determined by hospital staff availability and the risk grade of the patient being transported and is entirely at the discretion of the service user).

  • PSS staff are able to manually restrain and are also trained in the use of handcuffs.

  • Handcuffs will always only be used as a last resort.

Transporting a Patient sectioned under the Mental Health Act 1983

When transporting a patient who has been sectioned under the Mental Health Act 1983, it is essential that any known risks are advised at the time of referral. This will enable us to determine and agree if the Secure Section (caged area of the vehicle) is necessary.

In the interest of safety for all involved, please note that transport may not be undertaken until provided with the relevant risk assessment.

An RMN/AMHN must accompany the patient during transit.

The RMN/AMHN is usually supplied by the Commissioner of the service however, should this not be available, where possible, an RMN may be provided by PSS.

Transporting an Informal Patient

An informal patient will be transported in the open section of the vehicle as they may not be detained without consent. Should it be necessary to transport an Information patient in the Secure Section of the vehicle due to risk of harm to either themselves or others, a Service User Authority Form must be signed by the patient, giving consent to the method of transport being provided.

Tranquillisation

Where it is necessary for a patient to be sedated, PSS staff may, under no circumstances, administer any drug via any means. However, if necessary, PSS may be involved in sedation of the Service User by way of physical restraint, allowing the AMHN/RMN to carry-out the necessary task in accordance with the Rapid Tranquilisation Policy of the particular NHS Trust, Hospital or Clinic.

Note: PSS are not able to transport a patient who has been fully sedated as our vehicles are not suitable in this case.

Policy and Procedure for the use of Rapid Tranquillisation available on request.
